Spring Lake Dive Authorization Course Scuba Certification

The Spring Lake Management Plan requires that anyone scuba diving in Spring Lake must first complete the Spring Lake Dive Authorization Course (DAC). This course ensures that all divers are proficient, familiar with our policies, and have a fundamental understanding of this unique and sensitive environment.

Scuba diving in Spring Lake is regulated due to the delicate nature of the habitat. Declared a "Critical Habitat" in 1980, Spring Lake is home to seven federally listed species and is protected under the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Additionally, Spring Lake is an archaeological site and is governed by the Texas Antiquities Law. As such, recreational diving in Spring Lake is prohibited without proper authorization.

This comprehensive scuba diving certification course takes place over two days:

Academics – Day One (At Home)

The Spring Lake Dive Authorization Course is split into four academic modules, along with assessment quizzes, which must be completed by each student before the start of the class. The academic portion of the course is conducted via Zoom, the Wednesday before the diving portion. The class lasts about two hours and begins at 6:30 p.m.

Diving – Day Two (At Spring Lake)

On the second day, students will meet at Spring Lake for a diving skills assessment, a tour of the springs, and a demonstration of common volunteer tasks aimed at preserving the habitat. The diving session lasts approximately four hours and begins at 1:00 p.m.

All course materials and information will be provided after registration.
This course is graded PASS/FAIL. Students must score at least 70% on each quiz and demonstrate proficiency in buoyancy control and situational awareness to successfully complete the course and earn their Spring Lake Diving Authorization.
